Second night in Kenya, first day and bruised all over. So reassuring to be in Africa, where life is more or less the same. I digress though. The flight as long. From Atlanta to Amsterdam the plane was very full, and uncomfortable. We arrived early in the morning at Schipol Airport, it is a lovely airport, big and lots of windows, plenty of places to sit and eat. Also it was filled with security. The flight to Nairobi they split Charlotte and I, but I got three seats to myself, so she came over to take advantage of the extra space.
Nairobi was breeze as usual, Mike (head of airport security) met us, and whisked us through immigration, security and then the long wait for bags, he then whisked us through customs.
Daddy and Sian where waiting for us, and a brisk drive to the house. Rhiannon and her boy (Fran) were waiting, so a shower, dinner and bed. I did not sleep, too restless. I listened to the Askari walking around, heard the birds wake and talk, so i figure I got maybe 3 hours sleep.
Up at 6:30, breakfast, and load the cars: 6 people, 3 dogs. food for a week and clothes, and 2 cars and we ere off. VROOOM. Oops, first stop to withdraw cash and once again we are off. The next stop was about 2 hours outside Nairobi to go white water rafting.Wow, what an adventure!
It ia a long trip. about 12 km, and goes from class 2-4 rapids, we went with a group of about 20 boys from a high school in Canada. First up was some serious safety lessons, then up to push of point and we were off. There was lots of falling out the rafts, getting swept away and an amazing jump from a 30 foot waterfall. I did it all, and ended up very very bruised from the waterfall, as I twisted in midair and landed on my side and back. Eventually back at the base, lunch. And then more driving and finally arrival in Lewa.
On the drive up to the house we saw: Grevy’s Zebra, Elephant, Kudo, Eland, Hunters Gazelle and Giraffe. We sorted out rooms in the house and showered, lit the fire and then dinner and bed.
