I went to Savannah this weekend to see my friend Keith get married. Mdaniel packed up his car and drove down Friday at a leisurely pace. We stopped several times, to get a cooler, get a new bulb for the headlight, come back and get ice packs, then off we drove. We stopped on the way down for food, drink and me to walk about as my back hurts after a long period of being still. I also managed to buy peaches at the side of a gas station – 10 or so for $2!
We arrived at Savannah safely and after driving in a circle for a bit found the hotel – Doubletree in the Historic Downtown – and checked in. Up to the room, to find a huge bed with SEVEN pillows :), and then off to the river walk area. We walked a bit, and I found the candy store – mmm fudge, and then more walking. Right at the end of the River Walk they had a live boxing match with TV cameras and big breasted women with too much make up. Kinda fun for 3 minutes. Then the food called.
We walked back towards the hotel along Bay Street, looking at the restaurants, and eventually settled on Moon River Brewing Company. I had the beer sampler and oyster sampler, then took my medicine – muscle relaxers and pain pills, and almost straight to sleep.
Up the next morning to the breakfast buffet at the hotel across the way as our hotel ended breakfast at 10:30, then off to Tybee Island. I asked the concierge for a beach suggestion, and he recommend Central Beach as it was quiet and easy to find parking at. He was right! After a brief stop to get beach towels, a hat and sunscreen, we were in the water. I can say I have faint tan-lines, and my back did not hurt at all in the sea. It was wonderful. I walked along the beach and left Matthew sleeping, and it felt great just to walk in the sand and have the waves say hello every few seconds.
My internal clock went off after 21/2 hours, and back to hotel then to change for the wedding. It was a very formal church ceremony, and very curious as I had never been to a First Baptist Church before. Much standing and singing. Then the reception. It was great to see some people I had not seen in ages: Melissa and her children Devon and Judd, and Jeremy and Matt and Alex. The reception food was good, all finger food and a huge cake, four layers and thousands of tiny icing flowers. The music was Karaoke, and so bad singing was done, though not by me. And we stayed until about 10:30 then exhausted back to the hotel and straight to bed for me.
I loved the giant bed at the hotel, it was a king with posters and huge amounts of linen, I slept so well on it, my back even felt better. I could not reach the floor getting out of bed, I had to slide down, it was awesome.
This morning was more breakfast buffet, this time at our hotel as up earlier, and then off to rent a scooter. Yep, we rented a scooter to tour Savannah’s Historic District and to give me an idea what driving a scooter is like. I can tell you now, I loved it. It is the perfect way to tour a small city, you can stop and get on and off easily and quickly, not worry about parking and you see everything. Absolutely perfect. I drove a bit – video to come and I learnt how to drive a scooter. don’t brake with feet.
Then back to the hotel to drive home. On the drive home we stopped to get a Audio CD and I picked “Guns, Germs and Steel” it is an excellent choice, CD one is done and 4 more to go.
